The Nelson Tramping Club is based near some of the finest tramping opportunities in New Zealand. Our club conducts an active, year-round programme of trips for members of diverse interests and abilities. Non-members are welcome to join our trips (subject to being properly equipped and undertaking trips consistent with their fitness and experience); we are always looking for new members!

Julia Flat & Hot Pools Medium

EASTER Weekend | Friday to Monday | Arthur's Pass National Park

Julia Huts & Hot Spring Soaking

Friday: Drive down the West Coast, and turn inland towards Arthurs Pass. Walk up Taipo River flats to Dillons Homestead or Hut (9km).

Saturday: Stumble up valley past Mid Taipo Hut to soak in hot springs and stay at the twin Julia Huts. (14km)

Sunday: Enjoy a sleep-in, and second soak, before cruising off down-river to Mid-Taipo Hut. (7km)

Monday: Return down valley & frequent various other 'watering holes' as we drive home. (16km)

BACK-UP PLAN (if inclement wx)

Explore the huts around Lake Sumner (Gabriel & Jollie Brook Huts circuit).

1 April
Walk/sail Medium

Walk from Marahau to Anchorage Hut. 1230 pick up by Brian in his 9m catamaran from the beach, sail, swim/snorkel, visit Adele Island. Drop off at Coquille Bay. Life jackets, snorkels/masks, tea/coffee supplied. $15pp boat charge. Limit 8. Weather dependent. If a shorter walk is preferred, pick up can be at one of the beaches between Coquille Bay and Watering Cove.

There is also a possibility of a trip later in the week in Tennyson Inlet, Pelorus Sound, walking along part of the Nydia Bay Track from Duncan Bay, or Archers Track from Penzance.

8 April
Hoary Head Hard


Drive to near the top of Mt Campbell (1330m), walk over the summit then pick up the ridge to Hoary Head. The ridge is open at first then enters the bush and goes over a couple of high points before climbing to the broad summit of Hoary Head (1473m). Return the same way. Approx 18km with up to 1300m of climbing on little or no track. High clearance 4WDs required to access Mt Campbell.

Monday. 7.30pm, Nelson Intermediate School, Tipahi Street.  Gold coin.

14 - 15 April
Fenella Hut Medium

Leave early Saturday morning, drive up to the Cobb and easy walk (4 - 5 hours) up to Fenella Hut (1 serviced hut ticket).  Bath in the nearby tarn if desired. Those who are keen to walk to Lake Cobb & Round Lake or explore the area can do so in the afternoon or Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon walk out back to the cars.
