27 & 28 Feb – 1 March
John Tait & Cupola Basin Huts – medium (scale 2.5) $17

Walk
alongside the lake and up the pleasant Travers Valley to John Tait Hut
for 2 nights. On the second day ascend steeply but with light pack to
the beautifully situated Cupola Basin hut to explore for the day. Topo
M30, N29, N30.


2728 February
Kiwi Saddle Hut
– Mt Luna – fit (scale 3.6) $16

From
Rolling junction head up the Wangapeka and Kiwi Saddle tracks to the
6-bunk hut in the saddle with a climb of 660m over 17km. Next day leave
early for panoramic views from Mt Luna (1630m ). Head west along a bush
track then over easy tussock tops to pt 1578, drop to a saddle then
climb a steep but straightforward section to the top, a climb of 710m.
Return the same way, a 25km day. There may be a medium option of
staying an extra day for any participants wishing to do so. Topo M28.


7 March – Hodge Creek Mystery Tramp – fit $13

Approach
is along the Flora Track, after that it will be off track for part of the time, with rough and steep sections. Limited to six.


7 March – Red Hills Hut – medium (scale 2.8) $18

An
opportunity to inspect the new Red Hills hut. Starting from a new DOC
carpark at the foot of the hill below the Rainbow turnoff there is a
rough section of track for 20 minutes until it joins up with the
upgraded 4wd road to the hut. Distance 6km with a 400m climb. From the
hut there is a choice of wandering down the track toward Maitlands or
climbing up to the plateau to the site of a former Air Force hut with
good views both up and down the Wairau Valley. Topo N29.


14–20 March – Lake Taylor / LakeSumner – medium $68

This is a 7-day trip starting and finishing at Lake Taylor. Stopping points will be as follows:
Day 1 – 14 April - drive to Lake Taylor – camp at DOC campsite.
Day 2 – Tramp to Jolie Brook stream hut.
Day 3 – Tramp to Hope Kiwi Lodge.
Day 4 – Tramp to Three Mile Stream Hut.
Day 5 – Tramp to Hurunui hut (those who wish to can carry onto hot pools and back.)
Day 6 – Walk back to Lake Taylor to camp.
Day 7 – 20th April Drive back home. Topo L32 M32.

20–22 March – Dillon Cone – fit (scale 3.7) $55

This is a prominent 2173m mountain of Molesworth shingle in the
Clarence. Leave Friday evening and travel to Acheron bridge via the
Tophouse road.
Day 1 – Travel a few k’s along Acheron R, wander up Guide R and camp in Dillon Stream. 200m climb over 13km
Day
2 – Scramble up Dillon Cone, avoiding most of the briar, matagouri etc.
Fabulous view for lunch. Return to camp. 4km each way with 1300m climb
Day 3 – Return as day 1, possibly with an alternative high route. Topo N31.


21 March – Lakehead Hut – easy (scale 1.8) $17

From
Kerr Bay follow along the eastern side of Lake Rotoiti to Lakehead Hut
and back. 20km total distance. 6hrs with very little climbing. Topo
N29.


20-21 March – Sunrise Peak via Bulmer tarn – fit

Drive
to carpark at the end of Owen Valley Road. Continue for 3km up the
river with five river crossings to Bulmer Creek and follow this up
until reaching steep bluffs which can be traversed on a narrow ledge to
a rope ladder. After climbing this the going becomes easier until
Bulmer tarn is reached at the bush edge. Camp here overnight and next
day climb a further 380m through the rocky karst formation below Mt
Owen to Sunrise Peak, 1583m. Return to carpark via Sunrise Ridge. Topo
N28.


27 March –The Doubles – fit

Drive
to Teal Saddle above the Maitai dam caretakers house. From there it is
a steady climb up through the bush and on to the distinctive rounded
peaks. Return the same way. Total climb 1300m and return distance
12.5km. Topo O27.


27–28 March – Salisbury Lodge/Balloon Hut & cave exploration – medium $14

This
is a combined trip from Flora carpark by Raymond who is going to
Salisbury Lodge and Barry who is continuing on to Balloon Hut. Both
will be exploring and possibly sharing cave exploration along the way.
They range from Sphinx Cave, Pillar Cave to the elusive Richards Cave,
which is apparently towards the headwaters of the Leslie River. This
will require some stream-bashing and offtrack navigation. Return to
Flora on Sunday afternoon. Each hut 3 tickets. Topo M27.


5 April – Easter Monday – Mt Arthur Hut / Flora Hut circuit – easy

From Flora carpark up to Arthur Hut and beyond for the view. Return via Flora Hut. 8km, 325m climb, 4hrs. Topo M27.


2–5 April – Raglan Range – fit $23

Access to this trip in the Raglan Range is via the Branch River Valley off Wairau Valley.
Day
1; Ford the Leatham River (preferably in 4WDs) then cross the Branch
River near the confluence with Silverstream. Follow the recently
upgraded bush track to Mid Silverstream Hut. ( approx. 6km, 4 hours +
road walk?)
Day 2: Continue up the valley then climb steeply through
bush onto a spur which leads to a tarn- speckled basin. Cross over a
small saddle and descend down Bull Paddock Stream to the small 2-person
Biv. (approx 7km, 6 - 7 hours)
Day 3: Climb back onto the Raglan
Range above the Biv, traverse a basin then descend into Lost Stream and
the beautifully situated 2 person Biv, part way down the valley.
(approx.5km, 5 - 6 hours)
Day 4: Follow the track down to the Branch
and back out to the 4WD road. Doc has recently put in a track plus
swingbridge, which means most river crossings can be avoided in case of
high river levels. (approx.10km, 4 -5 hours + 15 km road walk?) Tenting
plus huts. Topo N29.


10–14 April – Heaphy Track – medium

of the Great Walks. Huts $25/night. Return from Kohaihai and Karamea by public transport. Bookings have to be made for the
huts so contact Jo as soon as possible beforehand. 


10-17 April – Heaphy Track – explore Mackay Downs - fit $27

An
exploration of the Mackay Downs off the Heaphy track. Tenting may be
required although use will be made of the old Ministry of Works hut
which DOC have decided to retain. It is possible that one of the Heaphy
Track huts may also be used for which a booking is required so contact
Dion as soon as possible beforehand. Topo L25, L26.


17–18 April Lake Daniells & Murchison walk – easy

From
Marble Hill campsite 4km past Springs Junction, walk an easy track 9km
(100m climb,3 hrs) and stay the night in Lake Daniells hut (30 bunks, 3
tickets). The next day, time permitting on the drive home a stop will
be made at Murchison to walk the Johnson's Creek track to see the
earthquake slip. Topo L31, M31.


18 April – Bike ride Wairoa Gorge

Leave
from Richmond, bike to the Lee Valley, the Wairoa, Pig Valley, to
Wakefield with a possible cafe stop there, and back to Richmond. 2 1/2
hrs.


24 April – Conical Hill – medium

From
the Tapawera –Glenhope road near Huia cave climb 800m (3.5hrs) on a
lightly marked track to an open summit east of Mt Owen with great
views. Topo M28.


25 April – Lees Creek Hut – medium

From
the Rainbow road cross a swingbridge over the Wairau river then follow
an easy graded track for about 8km up the Lees Creek valley to the hut.
This is one of the most attractive valleys in Marlborough with its
alternating bush and open flats. Topo N20.


2 May – Tahuna Beach / Airport – easy $0

David

A flat coastal walk of 11km following the shoreline from
Tahuna Beach to the channel opposite Oyster Island returning via the
airport perimeter and the camping ground. Topo N27.
