Dan's favourite workout. From Maitai Valley climb 1000m over steep off track territory through pleasant forest to a great viewpoint. Return via Coppermine Saddle. A circuit of 15km.



4–5 September  Mount Fyffe

Test out ice axe and crampon skills on easy terrain, while climbing the dominant foreground peak seen from Kaikoura. Leave Friday night and stay in Blenheim.
Day 1: From Kowhai River carpark, climb 900m over 5km via a 4WD road to Mt Fyffe Hut (8 bunks, 1 ticket). Extensive coastal views and a great spot to watch the sunrise.
Day 2: Climb a further 500m on a snow covered (hopefully) 4WD road to the summit of Mt Fyffe, 1602m. Return the same way.



5 September (Sunday)   Dun Mountain traverse

A round trip from the Maitai dam going up to Dew Lakes, over Little Twin and Dun Mountain and back down the Maitai. 18km & 1100 climb.



11 September    Mt Robert Ridge via Pinchgut

The Pinchgut Track zigzags up the steep, bare face of Mt Robert on a well graded track. Take it at an easy pace and you will reach the ridge with spectacular views.



11-12 Sept   Barratts bivvy – Hapuku River

From the Grange Rd ford (140m) follow up the riverbed for 8km with some rough going above the gorge to Barratts Biv (790m, 2 bunks). The top part of the route may be snow covered. The biv is in a nice stand of totara forest near the historic Barratts hut. Climb up to Stace saddle and view Mt Manukau (2608m). Return the same way.



18-19 Sept   Granity Pass hut & Mt Bell

From Courthouse Flat climb 860m via Billies Knob track, down the Staircase then follow Blue Creek to the new Granity Pass hut which has no stove or fireplace (12 bunks 1 ticket). Next day climb a further 640m to nearby Mt Bell, 1875m, before returning to carpark.


19 Sept   Speargrass hut, Nelson Lakes NP

From Mt Robert carpark the track traverses gently through beech forest to join and follow the Speargrass Creek to the hut, which sits in a clearing in a field of tussock. Return same way. A climb 350m, 4 hours each way.
